They’re also awesome. Typing on them feels so great. I’m never going back to membrane keyboards after this. I’ve been spoiled.

I use a 20 year old IBM Model M. You’ve got to pry this thing from my cold, dead hands.

Yup. (Ducky Shine 5 with Nature Whites here)

Between cars, cycling and PC gaming, I really need to find a less expensive hobby.

A mechanical keyboard is going to come with my new build happening within the next year. That said, I’ve had no complaints with my membrane-based G110.

Meh. Gaming keyboards are a waste of money - want something that feels amazing to type on? Go for most keyboards from the late 80's early 90's .I have a 1993 Compaq RT101. :P

Who needs a windows key! :D

mm, not really.

cherry MX switchs last for a long ass time. and they are less tiring to use then a membrane keyboard.

love my CM storm. cherry red for life.

I don’t have money to burn on this one or the Razer mechanical keyboards.

Those Chinese OEM Greetech or Kailh keyboards are tempting, though, especially at ~RM 90 (USD 20?)...

I’ve got a Unicomp EnduraPro 104 at work.

Yes, at work. I’ve had it there for years, and my coworkers know where I live. I’m amazed I haven’t been murdered in my sleep.

I also need to either resurrect my Matias Tactile Pro 4, or get another keyboard based on Matias switches (ideally with a pointing stick of some kind). That thing is fucking loud , but I prefer Matias Clicks over anything Cherry MX.

I use a piece of shit Logitech keyboard that doesn’t have a numpad but has a built-in touchpad/mousekeys. When the longest thing you have to type are Oppositelock posts it’s not that big of a deal. It’s the compromise I have to make when my only PC is also the entertainment centre for my living room.

If I ever get a bigger place then I’ll have a primary gaming PC with a proper setup (I miss dual monitors so much) and then continue using a secondary, lesser PC for home theatre needs. Perhaps I can just do dual TVs instead of dual monitor...

I use a Vortex KBT One, which uses Cherry MX Green switches underneath all of the keys rather than just the space-bar and Enter keys. I love it, it’s so clicky and I like that they don’t give under the slightest pressure.

It also comes with Blues, but this one’s got Browns indeed (the insert on the left is color coordinated with the switch type).

The funny thing is the MX browns are rather quiet and the ones on the G710+ are damped to make them even quieter. They do sound rather loud when you are the one typing but if you listen to someone else typing on it from somewhere else in the room they aren’t loud at all.

You won’t find ‘em for $2 any more, really - the people that still have them know what they’re worth.

Ten or fifteen years ago, OTOH...

It is worth noting that the current production keyboards have native USB, and can have Windows keys. Also, I find that they’re a bit lower force required than the IBM-made ones, and I prefer how they feel. The quality of the plastics on the new ones are downright atrocious, though...

My hobby: Pointing out that “membrane” is the wrong term for rubber dome keyboards.

(Membrane refers to the electrical switching mechanism, there’s keyboards that are considered “mechanical” that have a membrane for switching, such as some Acer keyboards that use Alps keycap mounts and feel like Alps switches, and the Model M. Conversely, there’s rubber domes that don’t use a membrane, such as the capacitive-sensing Topre keyboards.)

It’s been updated to ‘+’ on Logitech’s and most vendors’ sites, but it’s still marked G710 on the keyboard itself for some reason: http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g710-mechanical-gaming-keyboard

They are doing weird things with the blue version. It seems like it is currently a lottery between 4 different versions. The original version, one where just the silver panel at the bottom has been updated to say Logitech, one with full G710+ branding, and one which is identical to the G710+ (including orange accents around the G keys) but with blue switches. I only know of 2 examples of the last one so it may be a mistake but they were both ordered as being blue switches.

Pointing out that “membrane” is the wrong term for rubber dome keyboards.

This is a meaningless correction to make. When someone says ‘I Threw away my old membrane keyboard for a Das 4', you know what they meant. We don’t need a Ph.D level thesis on keyboard technology to know that for most people ‘membrane’ = ‘not mechanical’, and that this nomenclature communicates most of the relevant information to someone when it is used.

It may be the case that membrane switch technology is used in some mechanical keyboards, but you know that isn’t the norm. Most keyboards you can buy today are 1) Mechanical or 2) something else. There are a lot of ways to make a keyboard, but only the mechanical ones have been singled out as a desirable feature in a keyboard. Given that, the ‘something else’ is going to get a colloquial name as a reference.

My first Model M was $5.00!

Filled with dead baby cockroaches and extremely dirty.

I’ve got a new one as well, the plastics are a bit worse, but not too bad. They’re all American made in a small factory in Lexington Kentucky.

I thought it was a waste of money too, until I bought my G810 Orion Spectrum. Holy crap is it nice. These Romer G switches are way better than any mechanical switch I’ve used in feel and noise. Nearly as quiet as a rubber dome but feel much better. Plus the fancy lighting and huge amount of customization. Every game I play I find a new neat feature built in. For example, in GTA 5 when I have the cops on me, the F keys turn into flashing red/blues. In Civ 6, it changes colors based on what country I am playing as and when I’m at war the keyboard lights red.

Neat.

But if I don’t have N-key rollover how will I use 40 keys simultaneously? I need N-key rollover because otherwise I can’t even type. Without N-key rollover I get ghosting all the time bro I don’t even know how you use a regular keyboard.
